Rudolf Hassler introduced the German-based sportswear label Puma in the mid-1900s. Best known for its premium sneakers and apparel, all of which spotlight iconic Puma brandings such as the Puma Cat and the Puma Formstrip, Puma maintains its place at the forefront of the fashion and lifestyle industry. In addition to its selection of technologically-advanced athletic sneakers and lifestyle footwear, Puma has expanded into sportswear and elevated athleisure apparel such as hoodies, leggings, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and more. Alongside its premium offerings, Puma has become well-versed in collaborations in recent years, having collaborated with renowned designers and brands such as Dua Lipa, TMC, Liberty, AMI, and most recently, Rhuigi Villaseñor.
Phillippines-born Rhuigi Villaseñor always grew up interested in fashion and designing clothes, as he credits his mother, a tailor, for his early understanding of garments and construction. With no formal training in fashion whatsoever, Rhuigi is best known for founding the high-end streetwear and contemporary menswear label Rhude, which is a personal commentary on Los Angeles’ style and culture. Rhuigi has gained traction from countless high-profile artists, most notably Kendrick Lamar, who was seen wearing a custom black and white paisley bandana-print t-shirt at the Grammy’s. This was the first-ever piece crafted for Rhude and contributed to catapulting Rhuigi’s notoriety.
Puma and Rhude have been collaborating since 2018, but 2022 marked Puma's debut, collaborating solely with Rhuigi Villaseñor. Just in time for spring, Puma and Rhuigi collide once again for the third time to introduce a collaborative apparel, accessory, and footwear capsule that celebrates 50 years of hip-hop. This capsule aims to unite the past, present, and future, all while continuing to celebrate New York City’s legendary street and style and five iconic boroughs. The 1970s hip-hop and b-boy culture inspires the designs.
This capsule’s honor towards New York is highly notable throughout its visuals and the quality of the retro designs, such as in the Puma x Rhuigi Track Top. Taking on a cotton and polyester blend, this collaborative silhouette features a full-zip closure leading to a mock neck. Ribbed detailing can be found at the cuffs and hem for further dimension. Embroidered Puma branding is at the chest, while the hand pockets offer a functional touch. Additional branding behind the neckline paired with the stripes at the arms wrap up the design.
The Puma x Rhuigi Double Knee Pants also make an impression with their embroidered branding seen at the front leg. A drawstring waistband is seen, while the waist slant and back patch pockets make a functional impression. This capsule also includes a Puma x Rhuigi Graphic Tee in Black and Pristine. As for accessories, the Puma x Rhuigi Bucket Hat is a must-have with its corduroy construction and embroidered collaborative branding. Puma and Rhuigi also introduce their collaborative take on the iconic Suede sneaker. Nicknamed 'B-Boy,' this premium sneaker takes on a suede upper in addition to leather detailing seen on the signature Puma Formstrip and heel tab. A crepe rubber outsole supports the design, while gold-foil branding makes an impression. Gold-foil numerals are seen at both heels, while additional branding at the tongue and insoles solidify the remainder of the sneaker.
